Cadel Evans' hopes of a maiden Tour de France victory were dealt a shattering blow overnight when his super-domestique Thomas Dekker was kicked off the Lotto squad after he tested positive for EPO in a re-test of a December 2007 sample. Dekker rode for Rabobank at the time, and would have been team-mate with disgraced King of the Mountains champion Michael Rasmussen.
Dekker will be replaced in the Lotto squad by Charlie Wegelius. The removal of Dekker is a big hit to the strength of the Belgian squad and it will be no surprise to see Evans isolated on the major mountain passes again this year.
